The cathedral itself is located outside of the Vatican City boundaries, territorially located within the city of Rome in the Italian Republic. The Scala Sancta (Holy Stairs), wooden steps that encase white marble steps, are, according to Roman Catholic tradition, the staircase leading once to the praetorium of Pilate at Jerusalem, hence sanctified by the footsteps of Jesus Christ during his Passion.
