Piazza Navona is a majestic symbol of Baroque Roman architecture. It has the oval shape of the Stadium of Domitian, that once occupied the site. In the square you can admire several sculptural and architectural creations: Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the world famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers, 1651), portraying for gods who represents the four rivers of the world known at the time (the Nile, Danube, Ganges, and Plate).
Francesco Borromini and Girolamo Rainaldi designed the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone and Pietro da Cortona painted the galleria in the Pamphilj palace. Other notable sculptures are two fountains by Giacomo della Porta: the Fontana del Moro and the Fountain of Neptune.
In the past centuries Navona Square has often hosted open air theatrical events, while nowadays a Christmas market is held in the piazza every year, from the 1st December to the Epiphany.
