Trevi Fountain

Trevi Fountain is an impressive Baroque fountain located in the Trevi rione, Rome. It is 25 metres high and 19 wide, was designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi in 1730 and became famous for being the setting of an iconic scene in Federico Fellini's film La dolce vita.

Palazzo Poli, with its majestic Corinthian columns, is the background to the fountain. In the centre stands a triumphal arch and below it Oceanus, lying in a shell chariot, dominates the scene. At his sides are Abudance and Salubrity, while horses and tritons guide the chariot and provide the whole structure with symmetrical balance.

A traditional legend maintains that it is lucky to throw a coin into the fountain, with one's right hand over one's left shoulder and with the back facing the fountain. Approximately 3,000 euros are thrown into Trevi Fountain each day by visitors and tourists.
